The region having enormous potential is being tapped as a major tourist destination in India of late. The eight states of the North-East present such breathtaking refreshing landscape that it stays unmatched to anywhere else in the country. Take for instance, the lush green surroundings and azure sky of MANIPUR,which makes it an exquisite jewel crafted by nature. The state also boasts of Keibul Lamjao national park, the only floating national park in the world on Loktak Lake, the largest in Eastern India. The Brow-antlered deer ‘Sangai’ is only found in this region. Interestingly, the game of Polo originated in Manipur; besides it has the unique Ima market, run only by the women.
The state ofMIZORAM offers a perfect blend of climate, culture, sports, music, and unblemished valleys. It presents an ideal setting for hiking and trekking.
True to its name, buoyant white clouds fill the cerulean skies of MEGHALAYA. It is blessed with many breathtaking views of nature in its serene beauty, soaked lush green pines, scenic waterfalls and Scottish landscapes with scattered monoliths. The state is also home to Mawsynram, which gets the highest amount of rainfall in the world, besides 325 of the 1,000 varieties of orchids found in India. Mawlynnong, claiming to be the cleanest village in Asia, is also situated the state.
Better known as the ‘Switzerland of the East’, a few places in the planet can match the unsullied valleys of NAGALAND. The Kohima War cemetery-maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates the sad tale of 1,378 young soldiers who laid down their lives during the World War II. The world’s tallest rhododendron, a wild flower, was discovered here, as well as the Naga Jolokia, one of the hottest chillies in the world.
ARUNACHAL PRADESH, nestled in the Himalayas, is home to the 400 years old Tawang monastery, snow capped mountains, lush green meadows and a range of flora and fauna. The state’s Namdapha national park is the only park in the world where tigers, leopards, snow leopards and clouded leopards are all found together. Sela Pass near Bomdila is an important landmark of the 1962 Indo-China war, which is worth a visit.
Literally ‘a Land of adjoining water’, TRIPURA is surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh. With a small geographical area, Ujjainta, Pushbanth, Kunjaban and Neer Mahal palaces add to the rich history of the state. The Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary in the state is the only place to house the unique spectacled monkey.
Spread below the the third highest mountain peak in the world, Mount Khanchendzonga (8534 mts),SIKKIM offers tourists an unusual experience amidst the verdant hills, tranquil valleys, and fast flowing rivers offering endless possibilities for adventure sports. Sikkim has over 200 monasteries, which are integral in influencing the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people besides demonstrating the ancient rituals in custom.
The ‘Land of Red rivers and Blue hills’, each place in ASSAM has something celestial to offer. The awe-inspiring Brahmaputra flows through this vibrant land which encompasses vast tea estate and various national parks. A visit to this land is a must for a rare glimpse of the one-horned rhinoceros. The celebrated town of Digboi, where oil was first dug in the country is in the state. The largest riverine island in the world, Majuli, is home to the seat of Vaishnavite culture. An added attraction is witnessing the unexplained annual ‘mass suicide by birds’ in the Jatinga valley. For the religious lot, Kamakhya temple in Guwahati Assam is worth a visit.
The folk music, attire and dances of the region are very unique from the rest of the country. Adventure and sport activities like river rafting, scuba diving, angling, safari, trekking, bird watching and nature trail are being given utmost importance by the tourism departments and the state governments are also re-examining the policies of restrictions on entry and travel.
