The very mention of Rajasthan brings bright colourful images in our mind. This state is known for its exquisite handicrafts and artwork, as well as beautiful locations. The palaces and forts of Rajasthan are famous all over the world. Much of Indian history has evolved here; making this state a land of mystery, mythology, history, art and culture.
Characteristic of North India, and due to the desert in Jaisalmer, this state experiences extreme weather conditions: blazing summers and freezing winters. God has provided relief from the scorching heat in the form of a natural retreat; Mount Abu, a hill station at a height of about 1250 metres from mean sea level. The highest peak is at 1772 metres. In fact it was the summer capital of the Britishers, who had built beautiful bungalows for relaxing. The town has grown remarkably since then and the annual tourist footage had crossed 1 million by late eighties.
The three-day festival is a feast of folk and classical music and a window to the tribal life and culture of Rajasthan. The festival celebrates the warmth and cheerfulness of the people.
The dates of the Summer Festival in 2011 is from 15th-17th of May. The next year, the festival is on 04th to 06th of May, 2012.
The second and third day of the festival is more interesting because of various competitions that take place the whole day. Skating Race, Skater’s Show, CRPF Band Show, Boat Race, Horse Race, Tug of War, Panihari Matka Race and Deepdan add to the excitements of the celebration.
The Sham-e-Qawwali (Evening of Poems) is a much-awaited musical extravaganza, as renowned qawwals (poet s cum musicians) from all over the country can be heard regaling the audience. Poetry and music indeed are not bound by barriers of language, as the atmosphere reverberates the spirit of the festival and is enjoyed by all, including those who do not understand the literal meaning of the recitations.
The grand finale is celebrated with a display of dazzling fire works, bringing a thundering close to the annual festivities.
Lovers of music, art and culture should not miss this festival under any circumstances. Mount Abu enjoys a strategic location with very string connectivity to all major cities of Rajasthan such as Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. In fact the railway station is only 29 km away and the airport is at a distance of about 185 km in Udaipur. Buses, taxis and hired cars provide the last mile connectivity to you.
