Speed, thrill and adventure!! When we think of Formula 1 racing, these three things come to mind. Indeed, Formula 1 Racing is one of the most thrilling sports, which is popular the world over. India is soon to join the bandwagon of Formula 1 and 2011 is set to be a big year for sport in the Asian country thanks to the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. Yes, that’s right, F1 India has been handed over a chance to host its inaugural Formula 1 race in October 2011.
The World Motor Sport Council on September 8, 2011 released the schedule for the 2011 Formula 1 season, which is set to be the longest one in the sport”s history with a total of 20 races. India features in the list during the October season.

The Indian Grand Prix will be a Formula One race held in at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. The first event is scheduled (subject to homologation of the circuit) to take place on October 30, 2011 as the 17th race of the 2011 Formula One season.
The race will be held at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, 50 km from Delhi. The circuit will be roughly 5.14 kilometres (3.19 miles) and will be designed by F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke. The track will be spread in an area of 875 acres, located near the Noida-Delhi Express Way. However there are plans to increase the seating capacity to 200,000 later on. The sprawling circuit will be a part of Jaypee Green Sports city and will also be used for hosting one or more rounds of Moto GP championships in the year 2012. The track in all has 16 largely medium speed corners where F1 cars will lap at an average speed of 210 km/h. The back straight will let F1 cars reach 320 km/h making it one of the fastest tracks in the world. A grand stand with a capacity of 13,000 will overlook the turn 10 and turn 11 giving the F1 fans an opportunity to be a part of the action.
Formula 1 coming to India, especially to National Capital region indicates tremendous economic benefits for the country and also the capital region. Delhi has been seeing a lot of infrastructure developments for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. According to experts, the benefits of a booming economy like India joining the F1 calendar are clear. Not only would the hotel and tourism industry get an immediate boost, the country’s profile, too, would get a lift.
Experts are also of the view that once the Indian Grand Prix kicks off, it has the potential to generate around $170 million in revenue and employ as many as 10,000 people. The opportunity in advertising tie-ups between manufacturers and F1 cannot be overlooked either. The race will be coinciding with the important Diwali holiday, when consumer spending is typically at its highest and many are travelling, so economic prospects are excellent. In terms of tourism, huge number of domestic as well as international tourists is expected to visit the Grand Prix, which will result in increased economic activities for related sectors such as hospitality industry, travel agencies and tour operators. Particularly, Delhi will receive a major boost in city tourism due to the F1 grand prix as majority of international tourists are expected to stay here during the event duration. It will result not only in increased hotel bookings but also increased footfalls at the various places of interest all over the city. The city has a variety of places of historical and cultural significance which can of interest to the international tourists who visit for the Grand Prix. They will get to experience the rich cultural heritage, ethnic handicrafts and authentic Indian cuisine in the city. Overall, the prospect of an Indian Grand Prix is a welcome one.
