Sikandra is known to be the suburbs ofAgra. It is a structure with a perfect blending of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist. If you are on a quest for the lesser explored destinations around Taj which have an air of mysticism and high on the historical and architectural quotient “Mariam’s Tomb, Sikandra” is the place to be…….
A slice of history!!
This is the tomb of Rajput Princess of Amer, Hira Kunwari ,married to the great Mughal Emperor Akbar and the mother of his much-awaited heir Salim. She was named Mariam Zamani by Akbar on the eve of the birth of his son and heir Salim (later known as Jehangir) in 1569 at Fatehpur Sikri. Jehangir in 1623 built a stylish tomb for his mother close to the tomb of Akbar within the compound of Christian Missionary Society. These tombs are situated in Sikandra region,
Art and Architecture…….
This structure, originally a Baradari was stylized into a tomb by rebuilding the four facades into typical Mughal style of architecture and adding a central compartment to the building used for the purpose of final resting place of queen. Red stone stairs were also added leading up to the burial place. A cenotaph was placed above the real tomb protected by red stone jailed balustrade on all sides.
A Special mention on the ornamentation!!
Red Sandstone façade, Ornamental octagonal towers and panels adorned with geometrical floral patterns & floral paintings form an integral part of the design feature. The cupolas have beautiful carved columns with hexagonal base. Stone brackets occupy the spaces below the chajja while beautifully carved friezes above it speak volumes of the golden era of architecture.
