The name Raksha Bandhan signifies ‘a bond of protection’. On this auspicious day, brothers make a promise to protect their sisters from all misfortunes and the sisters pray to God to protect their brother from all harm. The festival is celebrated in the month of August. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on a full moon day of the Hindu month of shravan , on which sisters tie the sacred thread.
The deep bond of love and affection between a brother and a sister is one of the deepest and noblest of human emotions. ‘Raksha Bandhan’ or ‘Rakhi’ is a special occasion to celebrate this emotional bonding by tying a holy thread around the wrist of the brother. This thread, signifies sisterly love and respect, which is rightly called the ‘Rakhi’.
On this very day of Raksha Bandhan,in accordance with the traditions and rituals, sisters prepare the “pooja thali” with diya, roli, and rakhi. To mark the sacred occasion, sisters tie a sacred thread of love to their brothers praying for their long life and happiness. Roli and rice ( akshat) is put on the forehead of brothers which is auspicious and iternal. In return, brothers also wish them a good life and promise to take care of them and stand beside them whenever they face any difficulty. Brothers also present their sisters with special gifts. The gift is the acknowledgment and a reminder of his love for his sister. Although, the way of celebrating the festival may differ from place to place but the essence remains the same.
