Is travel on your mind? Planning where to go? Before you explore options abroad, take a look at your own country. In fact, India is not just any country, but a continent in itself, such is the variety of tradition and culture, land form, religion and much more.
Think of India, and the image on your right is bound to be the first one that comes to your mind. Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the World.
The Taj was built by the Mughal emperor, Shahjahan in the fond memory of his wife, Nur Jahan on the banks of the Yamuna River, in Agra, a small town of Uttar Pradesh. Built in sparkling white marble, its intricate designs attract tourists round the year from India and abroad. You can obtain special permission from the Archaeological Survey of India to visit this monument on a full moon night for a breathtaking view of this architectural splendour. And while you are in Agra, do visit the Agra Fort and taste the famous petha.
A place you cannot afford to miss in Uttar Pradesh is Varanasi, a city that epitomizes the culture of India. Located on the banks of River Ganges, this town is where people come to pay respect to their ancestors and most importantly, God. The famous Vishwanath temple as well as the holy ghats of Varanasi are highlights of the town’s claim to fame. It is indeed a beautiful place, with narrow lanes and old architectural forms. Religion hangs in the air here. You may get your future told by an astrologer. If you wish to take a dip in the holy water, be a bit careful because the water is slightly polluted, but do not miss a boat ride on the river in the evenings. A popular belief says that if an Indian does not visit Varanasi in his lifetime, he would have to come for his final reunion with the Almighty.
