Cabo de Rama Fort

Cabo De Rama Fort, South Goa

Cabo de Rama Fort is one of the oldest forts in Goa, built much before the arrival of the Portuguese. Besides its historical significance it has a mythological legend also attached to it. It is said that Lord Rama accompanied by his wife Sita took refuge here during their exile period. This ancient fortress is located in the Canacona district of Goa, India just 25 km south of Margao.
A slice of history
The original fort structure was Hindu constructed around 1763 by Hindu warriors; subsequently it was captured by Portuguese after defeating the Raja (King) of Soonda and renovated subsequently. The present unsteady structure with towers and rusty cannons is a leftover of the Portuguese addition to the fort. They equipped it with 21 guns and military barracks, as well as commandant quarters and a chapel which was abandoned when the Portuguese left this place.
