Ram Bagh was originally built by Babur in 1526 on the pattern of Persian terraced and Char Bagh Plan. As no natural source of water was available it was drawn from river Yamuna by series of water wheels flowing into network of canals, cascades and tanks descending from one terrace to the other.
Stairs run on both sides of the cascade leading upto the pond made of Red Sandstone. Other prominent features of this Bagh in terms of Design were large platforms, pathways, tree avenues, and chatris at regular intervals to give it a look and feel of Gardens as existing in heaven as per Babur’s Wish.
Ram Bagh through the ages!!
This Garden again caught the fancy of his great grandson Jehangir who renovated during 1615-1619 and renamed it as “Bagh –i- Nur Afshan.” As a part of this venture two beautiful suites overlooking the river were built. The suites were composed of dalans and rooms decorated with figurative paintings typical of Jehangir’s Era.A Large tank with fountains as inlets also adorned the bagh.
Even the british could not resist the temptation of this beautiful place for in their period this was converted into a full holiday resort during the “East India company” phase (1803-1857)
The Mughal Garden connection………
This Garden presents the earliest form of Mughal Gardens in India because features such as terraced four quartered plan, canals, cascades and tanks were introduced for first time in India and subsequently became a part of the famous “Mughal Garden concept” given by Mughals.
The bagh contained a mixture of exotic trees such as Anjir, Nashpati, Saib, Badam, Shah-Tut, Anar, Naranj, Khajur &Kolah and native plants such as Aonla, Amrud, Amaltas, Bel,Bijaura, Chakotara, Chironji, Gular, Imli, Jamun, Kachnar &Karaund. At the behest of Jehangir ornamental trees such as Saron,Nihal and chenar were added .
