Have you ever wonder where food comes from? I know you know that, of course, everything comes from the farms. But have you ever really seen them grow from the soil, watched them develop each leaf, or waited eagerly for the grains to turn golden and fall from the husks.
Most cities in India are embraced by wonderful countryside which means farmlands are only less than a couple of hours drive away. Pune is basically surrounded 360 degree by small villages and farmlands. Whichever road you take, when you head out of the city, you will find never-ending farmlands covered with rice, wheat, vegetables and fruits.
On the weekend, try a self-drive tour, taking farms and rural villages hidden along highways. You will be amazed by a great experience a short drive can bring you. When you see ingredients you regularly use spreading throughout acres of lands, it makes you realize how precious each handful of them is. Why should we make an ago-tour road trip?
Visiting farms is a great way to connect with your food source and appreciate the ingredients and hard work of farmers who produced them. When you visit the farms, you also see the trend and what are in season. Fresh seasonal food is not only reasonable but healthy as well. Sometimes the local farmers are very eager to sell their produce directly from their farms to visitors. You will have a chance to take home a fresh pick of the day. Green fields with fresh aroma of mud and plants are easy to fall in love with.
There are a growing numbers of small agro farmstays opening for visitors, but I found that most of these facilities are only set up to entertain the visitors with few plots of vegetables and flower gardens. In the rural roads, there are real deals out there where you can see the farmers work and their sweats drop.
To plan a memorable agro-tour road trip with your family, first you had to understand the route. Take your time to research which part of the state has which produces. Remember these are working farm and you should not interrupt. Go early, make your drive flexible and enjoy ever bit of the ride. Equally important is the place you choose to stay at, a place which has a generous and informed host will make your trip truly memorable. Homestays are very good options as you get a peek into the nuances of the place, and the local host tips about the place makes it truly memorable.
