Madurai which is known as the ‘cultural capital of Tamil Nadu is situated on the banks of the river Vaigai, about 450 kilometers from Chennai. It happens to be one of the oldest cities of India. The origins of this city dates back to 300 BC. The bustling city of Madurai is said to have been known as Kadambavanam or a forest, in the days of yore. Tucked away off the Madurai-Natham Road on the outskirts of Madurai is an ethnic resort which is also known by the same name, Kadambavanam.
Kadambavanam is set amidst a mango orchard overlooking the hills. Spread across 30 acres, it comprises 15 air-conditioned cottages, a multi-cuisine restaurant which is perched at a height of 100 feet abutting a hillock, a swimming pool, a temple and a cultural centre.
Kadambavanam is the brain child of Madurai-based couple Ganapathy and Chitra. While Ganapathy happens to be a well-known architect, his wife Chitra is a cost accounting and HR consultant. Their endeavour has been to offer visitors from across the globe a peek into the rich culture and heritage of Tamil Nadu, which happens to be one of the oldest surviving civilizations in the world. Kadambavanam works on a social entrepreneurship model that involves the local community.
Visitors to Kadambavanam are welcomed at the entrance by a huge statue of the village guardian Lord Aiyanar riding a white horse. The door steps of the cottages are decorated with kolam or decorative patterns made from rice. Every day at Kadambavanam is different. You can feast your eyes on Bharatanatyam; a dance form that dates back to 250 BC, listen to soul stirring Carnatic music, watch puppet shows, play traditional games of Tamil Nadu like Pallankuzhi and sample authentic cuisine of Tamil Nadu.
Madurai is renowned for its Madurai malli or the jasmine flower. The latter is exported to many countries across the world. Over the years, jasmine from Madurai has become very popular in cities like London and Paris. The folks atKadambavanam can arrange for a visit to one of the numerous jasmine farms that are located in and around Madurai.
