Assamese Society
Artist and sculptors, masons and architects, and others practicing minor crafts such as weavers, spinners, potters, goldsmiths, artisan’s of ivory, wood, bamboo, cane flourished in Assam from ancient times. Weaving is one of the most significant aspects of Assamese culture.
Though compared with Bengal, Assamese society is unique & joyful. Gamosa is a unique identity of Assamese society & has high esteem. Many people chew betel nuts and leaves. Their worship place is known as ‘Naamghar” which is devoted to Lord Krishna. Ahom, Bodo, Tiwa, Khasi, Karbi, mising are the various tribes found in this region.
Food
Ranging from pungent sheedol, a malaria buster to pH-balanced unique banana-alkaline extract calledkhar, Assamese food is just effortlessly healthy. It offers some scorching chutneys – mustard based panitenga and kahudi. If aloo pitika (mashed potatoes) and mati maah (black gram) dominate the vegetarian fare, bilahi maasor tenga anja (tangy tomato-fish dish), maas patot diya (fish with mustard roasted in banana leaf), koldil aru paro mangkho (pigeon meat with banana flower), hanhor maangkho aru kumura (duck meat with gourd) and maangkhor jool (mutton in gravy) rule the non-veg category. Pitha, Jolpan are very typical snacks of this region.
Nature & Resources
Assam is a world leader in production of tea, a major supplier of oil and natural gas, produces traditional silk, pat & muga. Assam is abundant in Medicinal & aromatic plants such as Citronella(Cymbopogan flexuosus Steud Wats), Lemon Grass, Patchouli (Pogostemon cabiln Benth) and Agar (Aquilaria agallocha Roxb). Agar oil alone earns the cultivators Rs 200 crore a year. Forest resources & Mineral Resources are in notable percentage.
National parks & Wildlife Sanctuaries
Kaziranga National Park, home to the famed one horned rhino, Manas National Park, Nameri National park are some noteworthy Parks featuring Hispid Hare, Pygmy Hog, Dhole, Elephants, Tiger, Great Pied Hornbill, Peafowl and many more.
Garampani (hot water springs), Laokhowa, Pani-Dihing, Nambor are a few sanctuaries frommany others.
