Attuvela Mahotsavam – The Water Carnival of Kerala

Attuvela Mahotsavam
Kerala’s mention brings to one’s mind images of picturesque beaches, serene backwaters, pristine natural beauty and exotic wildlife. And coconuts, of course! Someone had correctly christened this state as  “God’s Own Country” – indeed, it seems that God had created this state with utmost care detailing each aspect. Kerala has developed into one of the most famous tourist destinations, attracting both domestic and foreign travelers.

Serene Backwaters – God’s Own Country
You can enjoy the generous bounty of Mother Nature in Kerala round the year, but can witness the traditional culture of the indigenous people if you can coincide your trip with one of the many fairs and festivals that are celebrated in this state. Does this sound interesting to you? Read on!
Come to Kerala this 11th of April, an auspicious day on which kicks off the Water Carnival – a unique festival that is celebrated on water and not ground. It is a two day festival known as Elankavu Attuvela Festival or Attuvela Mahotsavam.
Beautifully Decorated Canoes
The procession of beautifully and colourful decorated small canoes.
It is celebrated after dark, when processions of beautifully decorated canoes start from Attuvela Kadavu, Vaikom, on River Moovattupuzha. The journey is about 2 km to the Elankavu Sree Bhagvathy Temple at Vadayar, Kottayam District. It is believed that Goddess Kodungallur Bhagvathy comes to see her sister, Goddess Elankavu Bhagvathy in the month of Meenam (March – April) and this festival signifies the welcome ceremony for the visiting Goddess.

The canoes are a display of bright light and exquisite artwork. Huge replicas of the Elamkavu Temple is erected on few canoes. There are smaller ones too, which are also very well decorated. Temple music and percussion fill the air, creating a religious atmosphere. Devotees also perform devotional dances on these canoes amidst all the festivities.
