It was the last day of our wonderful journey in Kerala and we were headed to Cochin from Kumarakom. Cochin (also called Kochi) is a major port city situated on the south-west coast of Kerala. Informally, Cochin is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala. Heralded as the Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi was an important spice trading centre on the Arabian Sea coast from the 14th century. Occupied by the Portuguese Empire in 1503, Kochi was the first of the European colonies in India.
The first thing we did on arriving in Cochin was to shop for a traditional Kerala Sari as I did not want to leave Kerala without acquiring one!!
Next, we visited the old Jewish town, which today, is a quaint street consisting of a number of vintage, antique and craft shops and the Jewish Synagogue is the centre of attraction of the street, being located at the end of the street.
We strolled leisurely in the Jewish Town looking at the various artefacts on display, until we came to the Synagogue. It was a whitewashed structure having a Clock Tower and in the bright sunlight looked beautiful. We went inside the Synagogue, however, since photography is not allowed inside it, We did not click any pics.
Our next stop was Fort Kochi, which was located nearby the Old Jewish Town. The Fort Kochi was quite different from what we expected from a “fort”. It was more of a palace spread over a fairly large area. The architectural style of the Fort had predominantly Dutch influences.
When we finished our tour of Fort Kochi, it was after noon and time for lunch. Our driver suggested we could go to Cherai Beach and have our lunch at one of the numerous shacks there serving awesome sea food and since my husband did not want to lose the opportunity to taste seafood one last time before leaving Kerala, we promptly agreed.
The Cherai beach was beautiful, not very crowded and though it was a bit hot weather, enjoyed our lunch and awesome ice creams by the beachside at real cheap prices!!
We lingered on for some time at the beach admiring the waves and cool sea breeze, reminiscing our fantastic stay in Kerala.
Soon, it was nearing evening and we rushed to the Airport, bid adieu to our driver and Kerala. Though this journey was ending, something told us, we would visit Kerala again!!!x
