IPL (Indian Premier League) is the domestic cricket league in India. Just because it is domestic, don’t get the wrong idea of it being played in the rural backyards. It in fact, is so much glamorous that it even outshines the best hit movies released during the course of the league. What started as a small league with 8 teams back in 2008 has grown into a frenzy today.
Indian Premier League is organized by BCCI every year and this time, the sixth edition of IPL is going to be held in April with 9 teams. So far, this seems a pretty normal tournament, but the things that make it so glamorous, so popular, so entertaining (like a Bollywood Blockbuster, maybe even better), are its unique features.
First, the teams are owned by franchises endorsed by celebrities like Preeti Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Shahrukh Khan and even Mukesh Ambani. Second, every team includes 4 international stars in the playing XI every match. The IPL also includes lots of other entertainments like the mascot, the music and the dance (of course by the cheer-leaders).
The popularity of the IPL has grown so much that nowadays, instead of being just a sport, people think of it as a way to relax and go on a vacation. With the duration of the game being just around 4 hours, people get a really good time at the venues (like Dharamashala, Mohali, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc). Not only this, people go on vacations at these venues for as long as a week, to both cheer their favorite teams and enjoy with family and friends.
Apart from the enjoyment and relaxation, there is one more very important impact of IPL that is connected with the economy. It is not very hard to realize this fact. Just think about all the thousands of people going to the stadium. And because everyone is in a relaxed mindset, no one thinks twice for paying a bit more for the products being sold in the stands or outside the stadiums. This not only increases the profit margin for each product or service, but magnifies the extent to which these products and services are sold. To top it all, this happens every single day for over a month till the tournament ends. This results a boost in the market, improving the economy of the country (more or less).
All in all, IPL has been a boon to the national population, be it the spectators, the sponsors, the workers and the players (most important part of the entertainment) and the tourism industry as a whole.
