In history, it was a part of the Old Silk Route. It was one of the important routes recognized during the colonial period and most of the trading between China and India was done through the Nathula Pass. This route also avoided Russian invasions of Tibet in 1904. In 1950, after the Republic of China took control of the Tibet, the passes to Sikkim became a way for the refugees. During 1962, Nathula became an area of skirmish. In later years, with the coming of BJP to the centre, the pass was formally opened.

Because of the varied climate and landscape it is home to a number of species which can add knowledge to the tourists. Some endemic types of animals are: Tibetan gazelle and wolf, snow leopard, yak, golden eagle etc.
